View Queenstown PackagesMilford Sound, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a stunning fjord located 287 km from Queenstown, accessible by a scenic drive or flight. Known for its towering Mitre Peak, cascading waterfalls, and diverse wildlife, it offers boat cruises and kayaking to explore its dramatic landscapes. Day trips from Queenstown often include stops at Mirror Lakes and The Chasm, adding to the journey's appeal. Visitors can book tours through local operators or self-drive to Te Anau, the gateway to Milford Sound.
The rocky mountains cut through the landscape, almost as if made by a sculptor himself. Milford Sound is extremely popular since it is the only inlet that can be accessed via road. You can explore the bay through cruises along the water, going up to the sea, or engage in canoeing and tramping. Even the drive up to fiord is one of sheer magnificence, and plenty of tour buses leaving early in the day are available. While you're here, visit The Milford Discovery Centre & Underwater Observatory, which allows you to gaze at the underwater life of the inlet and is situated at a depth of 10 metres. From September to December, the rainfall can reach as high as 250 mm daily. The scenic view presented at the inlet is so iconic that it seems fresh out of a movie.
