St. Peter, Salzburg Overview
Located outside the Catacombs at the foot of Festungsberg, St. Peter’s Cemetery is the oldest in Salzburg. The burial grounds are the final resting place of some of the essential people in Austria. The cemetery’s feature in the movie ‘The Sound of Music led to a rise in its popularity.
The Late Gothic St Mary’s Chapel is located in the centre of the cemetery. Many crypts, gravestones and burial vaults can be seen among the beautiful gardens of the cemetery. This burial site is the final resting place of some of the wealthiest families of Austria, such as aristocrats and merchants, and many notable personalities like Nannerl and Mozart’s sister.
