Attractions at Semenggoh Nature Reserve

Orangutan Gallery- This has been created to educate the visitors about the similarities between orangutans and humans and also their feeding habits so that tourists can take care of it while offering food to them. The gallery comprises of graphics which illustrate the DNA structure of orangutans, their mating season and their life cycle.

Semi Wild Orangutan- One of the major attractions of the natural reserve are the orangutans. The park has made significant efforts in protecting orangutans that were held captive earlier or the ones that were injured. Over the years the natural reserve has provided a healthy environment and a natural habitat for the orangutans to grow and multiply considerably.

Orangutan Feeding: Orangutan feeding hours are from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Tourists can offer nuts and fruits to the orangutans. There are however, certain times when the trees are full of fruits or the orangutans are full when they might refuse to eat anymore from the tourists.

Bird Watching- One can easily spot exotic species of birds which include Hooded Pitta, Banded broadbill, Green Broadbill, Blue-winged Leafbird, Asian paradise Flycatcher, Crested jay, Reddish Scops Owl. These are mostly migratory birds which one can easily spot either on the trees or the ponds inside the natural reserve.

Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre- This aims at protecting injured, weak and endangered animals. This rehabilitation centre even trains orangutans once held captive to live and ftch food for themselves in the jungles. Semenggoh nature reserve makes it a point to protect a number of species of animals which have lost their natural habitat.

Best Time to Visit

One should visit the natural reserve during April to October to see maximum orangutans. Orangutans are comparatively less visible in other months because of the fruiting season. One should also visit during the feeding time of the day so that they get to feed the orangutans.
