"Gateway to Scuba Diving Islands"

Semporna Tourism

Semporna is a town on Borneo island located in the Malaysian state of Sabah. Serviced by the Tawau Airport, which is around 58 Kms away, it is the capital of the Semporna district under the Tawau Division. Semporna is generally a staging point for visitors while going to dive or snorkel at nearby islands of Mabul, Mataking, Sipadan, Maiga, Kapalai and several others.

Famous for scuba diving and snorkelling, a go-to place from Semporna is the nearby Sipadan Island. It offers a breathtaking experience in its crystal-clear turquoise water, rich in marine life. However, do note that tourists must show dive permits as most of the dive sites fall under protected marine park areas. Snorkelling is another option and can be done easily by hopping through islands on a speedboat. Some famous snorkelling spots can be found at Mataking Island, Pom Pom Island and Sibuan Island, among many others. All these islands are located at a 30 to 50 minutes distance from Semporna.

A characteristic feature of Semporna is the stilt houses referred to as water villages. Tourists can also explore nearby regions and some natural and historical spots outside the town. At a 15-minute drive from Semporna is Bukit Tengkorak, which is an archaeological heritage site. This also opens up many hiking and trekking opportunities for those who fancy it. What's more, for those who travel to the nearby islands, some hidden trails await as well.
