A medieval fort made up of red bricks, Medici fortress, is located near historic city centre of Siena. It offers beautiful view of the city and the hilly surroundings. The external part of the fortress too is delightful as it is engulfed by wondrous gardens. It boasts a public park and an amphitheatre.
The Duke of Cosimo built the Fortezza Medicea of Siena, also known as the Fort of Saint Barbara, between 1561 and 1563 a few years before becoming the Grand Duke of Tuscany. By the end of the 18th century, the fortress was prohibited from being used for military purposes. From 1937 onwards it was converted to a public park. The amphitheatre which is built in the centre is used for concerts and other cultural events thus inviting many tourists. There are also temporary art exhibitions and tasting organized. This has certainly enthralled many tourists as well as other people. One of the bastions in the cellars has Enoteca Italiana, where Italian and other foreign wines can be tasted.
