Ruins of the Shali Fortress are a popular tourist attraction located at siwa town centre. Visitors can explore the maze-like pathways, climb up to see amazing views of the oasis and its many palm trees. What's interesting about the fortress is that it was made using a special material called kershef, which is a mix of salt rock and mud-brick.
Kershef helped keep the fortress cool during the hot days and warm during the chilly nights, which was super important in the harsh desert environment. It was built in the 13th century by the Siwan people as a fortress to protect themselves and their community. It has started to crumble down.
