Gulbahar Hatun Mosque is named after the mother of the Ottoman conqueror of Egypt and Syria, Yavuz Sultan Salim, and was built in honor of her in 1514 AD. It is one of the most famous mosques in Trabzon. It has a unique design and is made of a magnificent combination of black and white stone.
The mosque is a religious monument, gloriously decorated with a big carpet whose design is taken after Islamic Prayer mats. The mosque has a five-section long narthex area, a harem area with a large crescent dome, and a bi-directional zawiya. The marble and vegetation decorations inside featuring a muqarnas cassette were done in the 1880s, the year it got repaired. Its architectural style matches other mosques in the classical period of the Ottoman Empire. Children usually engage in religious studies here, and the aura of the place is very peaceful. The mosque’s courtyard has a newly constructed wooden store, a picture-perfect tea garden, a second garden with tulips, and a coffee shop nearby.
