Like several other spiritual institutions of the region, Trabzon’s Hagia Sophia started as a Greek Orthodox church, became a mosque, and then a museum. The stunning New Testament-themed frescoes of Hagia Sophia, accentuated by the high central dome and the opus sectile pavement of brightly-colored stones, make the building an architectural wonder. In 2013, a part of the museum was turned back into a mosque due to a court order. However, tourists are still allowed to visit to enjoy the art.
In the late 1950s, British art historian David Talbot uncovered and restored all the murals and frescoes whitewashed during Ottoman rule. These recovered works of art make Trabzon’s Hagia Sophia worth visiting, especially since you can enjoy its beauty without the crowds encroaching on its grander namesake 650 miles away in Istanbul.
