Unawatuna Tourism

Unawatuna, located about 5 km south of Galle, is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular beach destinations, known for its golden sands, turquoise waters, and laid-back atmosphere. The main reason to visit Unawatuna is for its pristine beach, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. The protected bay and coral reefs make the waters calm and perfect for families, while the surrounding area offers a variety of beachfront cafes and shops. Its proximity to Galle, with its historic fort, makes it a convenient stop for travelers exploring the southern coast of Sri Lanka.

Unawatuna also offers opportunities for snorkeling and diving, allowing visitors to explore vibrant marine life, including turtles. Jungle Beach, a hidden gem nearby, provides a quieter alternative to the main beach. The local cuisine features fresh seafood and Sri Lankan specialties, with many beachfront restaurants offering a range of dining experiences. Visitors can also explore the Japanese Peace Pagoda, offering panoramic views of the ocean, or visit nearby Rumassala Hill, believed to be part of the legendary Ramayana epic.

History and Mythology of Unawatuna

The description of the place has its roots in the famous epic Ramayana. In the epic, Hanuman was sent back to India to obtain some special herbs to heal Lord Lakshman. Unable to identify the individual herbs, Hanuman lifted the whole mountain bringing it back to the Lord. However, on doing so, a part of the hill fell in the location of the present day Unawatuna. The village is thus called 'Unawatuna' meaning 'fell off'.
