Anacostia River, Washington Overview

The Anacostia River gets a name from history of being a settlement of the Anacostan Native Indians. Combining with the Northwest and Northeast branches, this river eventually drains into the Potomac.

The Anacostia River is often called “DC’s Forgotten River”, being overshadowed by the larger Potomac River in the region. However, recent interest from government and private organizations have led to a number of projects to improve its water quality and the construction of activity centers by the water to promote tourism.
