Named after John Winthrop, the second governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, Winthrop is situated in Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Located on a peninsula, it is a beautiful city that embraces the Atlantic Ocean to the east and provides a majestic skyline view of Boston to its west. One of the oldest, smallest, and densest communities in Massachusetts, Winthrop is connected to Deer Island that serves as a laidback place for family outings, picnics, and fishing.
The extensive coastline of Winthrop boasts of beaches like Winthrop Beach, Yirrell Beach, Donovan's Beach, and many more. The Winthrop Shore Drive is a mile-long parkway that is listed on the NRHP. Other than the beaches, Snake Island is also a must-visit for locals as well as visitors. If this is not enough for one to visit Winthrop, it is worth mentioning that Sylvia Plath, Gaylord DuBois, and Pat Woodell are some of the many notable people who call Winthrop their home.
