Perched on a strategic mound overlooking York City, the Clifford Tower is a testament to the rich historical heritage of England. The distinct architecture of the tower exhibits elements of both Norman and medieval designs. The roof deck of the tower offers a complete panoramic view of the city skyline.
The tower was used for different purposes, first as a structure to keep an eye on the enemies and later as a prison. The tour inside this historic tower also includes new soundscapes, bringing the stories and the ancient time alive. Its circular stone structure, fortified walls, and commanding position atop a mound create a striking visual impact. While roaming around the nooks and corners of the tower, visitors can notice the Debtor's Prison, Female Prison, and the Assize Court on the castle premises. According to history, even before the Romans, Willam the Conqueror first built a castle here. It was in 1068 that he built another series of castles to suppress the rebellion, and finally, in 1245, the present time's Clifford Tower was built by Henry III. However, Tragedy struck in 1684 when a devastating fire engulfed Clifford Tower, leaving it in ruins. While this ruin continued to be inaccessible for a long time, now, because of the Clifford Tower Conservation Project, a free-standing timber structure inside the tower makes people see this medieval excellence.
