Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp
Distance: 4.8 km / 3 mi | Time: 3-4 hrs | Zone: Rainforest
Elevation: 2389m (7838ft) to 2785m (9137ft)
Altitude Gain: 396m

Departing from Moshi, a three-hour drive takes you through scenic mountainside villages to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. After obtaining the necessary permits, enjoy the beautiful rainforest scenery as your guide introduces you to the local flora, fauna, and wildlife. At lower elevations, the trail can be muddy and slippery, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended.
Distance: 17 km / 5 mi | Time: 6-8 hrs | Zone: Moorland
Elevation: 2785m (9137ft) to 3895m (12,779ft)
Altitude Gain: 1110m

After breakfast, ascend out of the rainforest and onto an open moorland path. The forest gradually fades, giving way to wide vistas as the trail climbs steadily to the rim of the Shira Plateau. As elevation increases, temperatures begin to drop.

Elevation: 3895m (12,779ft) to 3986m (13,077ft)
Altitude Gain: 91m

Although the day begins and ends at a similar elevation, this section is essential for acclimatization. Continue east along a ridge, passing the junction toward Kibo Peak. At Lava Tower, also known as "Shark’s Tooth" (elevation: 4650m / 15,250ft), pause before descending toward Barranco Camp for the night.

Elevation: 3986m (13,077ft) to 4034m (13,253ft)
Altitude Gain: 48m

After breakfast, tackle the steep Barranco Wall, an exciting ascent toward Karanga Valley. The climb is challenging but rewarding, offering spectacular views. At the top of the wall, join the junction with the Mweka Trail before continuing to Karanga Camp for the night.

Distance: 3.3 km / 2 mi | Time: 4-5 hrs | Zone: Alpine Desert
Elevation: 4034m (13,253ft) to 4662m (15,295ft)
Altitude Gain: 628m

The route to Barafu Camp completes the South Circuit, offering panoramic views of the summit from multiple angles. After reaching camp, enjoy an early dinner and rest in preparation for summit night.

Elevation: 4662m (15,295ft) to 5895m (19,341ft)
Altitude Gain: 1233m

Descent: 11.5 km / 8 mi | Time: 5-6 hrs
Final Elevation: 3090m (10,150ft)
Altitude Loss: 2789m

Summit day begins between midnight and 2 a.m. as the trek ascends between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. The path zigzags up heavy scree to Stella Point on the crater rim, where hikers can witness a stunning sunrise. A final ascent leads to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating the achievement, descend steeply to Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch and a brief rest. Due to loose gravel and volcanic ash terrain, gaiters and trekking poles are strongly recommended.

Elevation: 3106m (10,190ft) to 1633m (5358ft)
Altitude Loss: 1473m

After breakfast and a farewell ceremony with the crew, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Upon arrival, receive summit certificates before a short transfer to Moshi for a well-deserved hot shower, celebratory dinner, and relaxation.

If the full amount has been paid, a refund is available upon cancellation, subject to the following charges:
  • 90 – 60 days before departure: Deposit retained
  • 59 – 45 days before departure: 50 percent of the total booking cost will be refunded
  • 44 – 30 days before departure: 25 percent of the total booking cost will be refunded
  • 29 – 01 days before departure: No refund will be issued
If the trip is canceled due to unforeseen circumstances such as weather or pandemics, an alternative trip of a similar standard will be offered. If the alternative does not suit, all money paid will be refunded. However, any additional expenses incurred due to the booking remain the traveler's responsibility.

Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing and Wildlife Safari Hilltop Travel took care of everthing from the moment we booked to our arrival at the airport and throughout the trip. Our guides Denis and Atanas, along with the amazing cooks, waiter, bathroom attendants, camp master and porters, provided excellent equipments, tents and sleeping bags during our journey up the mountain. Despite the daily rains, the crew kept our spirits high with the songs and constant check-ins. Our safari guide, was excellent, spotting all big five and sharing insights.
