Getting Around Azerbaijan By Air

Traveling within Azerbaijan by air offers a convenient option for covering long distances quickly. Domestic flights connect major cities such as Baku, Ganja, Nakhchivan, Gabala and Lankaran, allowing convenient air travel options. Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku serves as the main hub for domestic flights and also receives international flights, giving easy access to international tourists. Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), as well as other private airlines, have regular flights operating across the country.

Getting Around Azerbaijan By Rail

Traveling across Azerbaijan is made convenient and comfortable by its modernized railway system operated by Azerbaijan Railways (ADY). Serving as the central hub, Baku connects travelers to various domestic and international destinations like Tbilisi and Moscow. Some major train routes in Azerbaijan are,

  • Baku to Ganja: A journey of approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes, with one train operating daily.
  • Baku to Gabala: Offering weekend services, this route takes around 3 hours and 20 minutes.
  • Baku to Agstafa: Covering a distance in approximately 4 hours and 55 minutes, with one daily train.
  • Baku to Agdas: Weekend services are available, with a journey time of about 2 hours and 51 minutes.
Online ticket booking is available for local routes and can be bought at the official railway website or the mobile app. Children under five travel free, while those aged five to ten can travel on a half-ticket. For overnight travel, passengers can choose from closed carriage compartments (Kupe), compartments for two passengers (S/V), or open compartments for up to six passengers (Platskart). Baku's Central Railway Station is conveniently located near the 28th May metro station. Additionally, within Baku, the metro system provides convenient urban transportation, connecting 23 stations across the city.

Getting Around Azerbaijan By Road

Getting around in Azerbaijan by road offers multiple transport options such as car rentals and taxis that can be booked for intra-city and inter-city travel.  In big cities like Baku, you can also book online taxis by using the Bolt app. There are regular taxis and mini buses known as Marshrutka connecting all the major cities across the country. 

Buses are another budget-friendly option to travel by road in Azerbaijan. You can book tickets for regular inter-city and international routes departing from Baku, the capital city. The online system accepts payment via credit cards. You can also buy a ticket at the ticket desks of the Baku International Bus Terminal. The online ticket reservation system operates daily from 12:15 AM to 11:45 PM. Each transaction allows a maximum of four tickets to be reserved.

Buses in Baku are accessible through the BakuCard and have modern amenities such as air conditioning, information monitors, and video surveillance systems.  For those without a Baku card, purple buses are available for a nominal fee payable in cash. There are regular intercity buses connecting all the major cities in the country. Some of these buses also operate internationally, connecting neighboring countries like Georgia and Iran.
