Honeymoon in Bhutan

Although quite famous for Bhutan’s sole international airport, the Paro Airport, the valley is set amidst green hills with rivers running and adorned with several historical and sacred sites such as the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Enjoy your much needed break in the laps of nature, dotted with Bhutanese traditional houses and paddy fields.

The little village is mapped with history about Wangchuk Kings. The 17th century architecture of Trongsa Dzong would transport you to a land like that of ‘A Christmas Wedding’. Running down an alley, is surrounded by wide stone stairs and paved courtyards. Do we need anything when we have a fort at an altitude of 2200 meter with gorges on the backdrop?

Must visit places: Motithang Takin Preserve, National Memorial Chorten, Tashichho Dzong, Simtoka Dzong, Dechen Phodrang, Dordenma Statue, Chri Monastery and Tango Monastery.

A relatively warmer place in winter with hot summers, Punakhs proudly stands as the erstwhile capital of Bhutan until 1955. With the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers meandering nearby, there are stunning views to hike to. The best time to visit would be during the Punakha Festival.

Must Visit Places: Punakha Dzong, Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup nunnery, Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten and Chimi Lhakhang Temple

Best time to visit: September to March

Also considered as the religious heartland of the country, Bumthang comprises of four valleys: Tang, Ura, Choekhor, and Chumey. With over a dozen sacred sites, Bumthang also offers a chance to tick off your bucket list with too many adventures. Be it trekking or mountaineering, burning lakes or horse riding, this is your place for an eventful holiday.

Must visit places: Kurjey Lhakhang, Jakar Dzong, Jambey Lhakhang, Tamshing Lhakhang etc.

Nestled in the snowy valley of Phobjikha, lies the little town of Gangtey. Listen to the mountains call and witness the majestic Himalayas in its beauty, while you find peace in its monasteries such as the Gangtey Goempa. The valley also houses the endangered black neck cranes, visiting from Tibet in winter and it is a sight to behold!

If you are short on time, but would like to have your anticipated honeymoon in Bhutan, be sure to check out Pheuntsholing. The place is on the border of West Bengal and Bhutan, India and has aspects of both the countries. The clean environment will make you connect with nature.

The “Hidden Land Rice Valley”, or Haa Valley is the second least populated region of the small Himalayan kingdom, with Haa Chhu flowing across the region from Mt. Chomolhari. This is a perfect honeymoon destination for couples who are looking for their quite time and are in for finding untaken trails.

Must visit places: The hundred-year-old Tagchu Gompa, the 5-storeyed Dobji Dzong, the Black and White temples, Shekhar Drak, and Has Samarpudung.

Mongar, one of the most-preferred honeymoon places in Bhutan, lies at an altitude of 1700 m and can be reached from Bumthang through the Thrumshing Himalayan pass. Being quite famous for the architecture of 1930’s Mongar Dzong, which was built without the use of any nails or drawings, the place is a feast to the eyes in the scenic Himalayas. Another 3-hour drive gets you to Lhuntse or Lhuentse, bordered by towering cliffs with the perfect romantic settings. The best part? It is an untouched, secluded district apt for just the two of you, with gustling waterfalls, steep cliffs and gorges and a view that you would not be able to get enough of. The ancestral home of the Bhutanese royal dynasty lies here at the Kurtoe region.

Even if you were on your ‘honeymoon travels’, who doesn’t like a tad-bit of folklore and local culture? Wangdue Phodrang is one of the eccentric destinations in Bhutan for honeymoon, thriving of the tales of Shaman cults. With most of the district being environmentally protected, it is one of the largest dzongkhags in the country. You find bamboo works slate and stone carvings etc. around the village as well as the mysterious black-necked cranes, the rare white-bellied heron etc. A very unconventional honeymoon to enjoy, indeed.
