Very good

BEAUTIFUL building in a great location. Small spa area (small whirlpool, Turkish bath, sauna) can be reserved for 1h/ day. Small fitness area exists (we have not tried). Staff was very friendly. Massages and treatments can be booked as well. The courtyard looks very nice to sit in during the spring and summer (we stayed in winter and did not use it). Several typical local bars close by.

A very good 4* hotel. For a 5* hotel (as listed on booking) it is ok.

We were a bit disappointed.

The breakfast room was a pleasant area. We visited the Lounge only 3 times. Only one bar tender deserves a positive mention, and his name may have been Louis/Luis?

Eggs poached in oil is not our choice. On our first day, breakfast service appeared to be a bit chaotic. Possibly young staff, covering for others on Xmas leave, fair enough. The arrival of the breakfast manager did not seem to make it any better. Just not what you would expect from an Hospes Hotel, let alone a 5 star ( but it cant really be in that category). Our room was in what was called the garden area , which was not good. Not in the main body of the hotel, and accessed through an outside space, albeit having a canopy. Used by the occasional smoker, a used coffee cup on a table for the first 36 hours, until I asked the hotel to tidy up the garden area.

Staff was very helpful with anything we needed.

I lost the plane and missed the first night of the booking. While it was already paid for I called and asked if I could get a refund since I found myself in a exceptional situation by losing the plane. They said the couldnt and while this was fair I would have expected a bit more customer orientation for a 5 star hotel.

The building itself was majestic, a grand estate with a lot of history; and yet it felt modern, elevated, and comfortable.

We have been to other hotels in the chain, which were better, so we will chalk it down to experience

the breakfast was good

the spa was not clean and cold. I booked the steam and when I arrived it was full. I paid for my dog to stay yet was not allowed to take him with us into the breakfast area\,restaurant. We were offered the bar area as an alternative place to eat, which would have been OK. But unfortunately this had a sewage smell, the hotel said it was from the spa. This was not good where ever it came from, as it this was a 5 star hotel. The hotel decoration is also looking tired, with scuff marks on the plain walls and plastered surfaces not matching, also corners of walls have been repaired where they have been damaged and the repairs are not good.

Exceptional

Fantastic staff.

Staff where fantastic. Our room was very big with a great bathroom and lovely bed and soft bed sheets. The spar was a bonus after the marathon to relax the legs. Breakfast was good. Felt like we where well looked after. Would stay again.
