    A beautiful hotel in Europes oldest city!
    A gorgeous hotel! The staff are amazing and the views from our room and the terrace were incredible! It was lovely to explore the Palazzo. The town of Matera is unbelievably beautiful.

    Mataera is not to be missed
    Palazzo Viceconte is in a beautiful location behind the Dourmo at the top of the old town so that was very much a plus. Driving a car through the narrow streets is not for an inexperienced driver. On arrival the hotel was impressive with lots of retained features and connecting rooms. Our room was large with a separate sitting room and the bathroom has an impressive view of the mountain beyond. Staff were helpful but there weren't a lot of them. Beautiful terrace bar on roof with a view to the old town and the sassi below. This palazzo is quirky but not luxury. The town is a bit unearthly and unlike anywhere I have visited before. I would definitely recommend visiting Mataera.

    Poor lighting - lots of switches that did nothing. Staff didn't know. No shower - an attachment over the bath, a missing seal on the screen meant water went everywhere. Not enough height for my husband to use. Friends in neighbouring room had no shower at all. A bath is not an option when its 35 degrees outside. Roof Bar closed - we were told it was end of season (1st Sept) and no bar staff. Had use of roof terrace and the views were spectacular however the bar wasn't open so we took in the views and some photos but did not linger. A missed opportunity. Overall this is not a hotel as it did not have the facilities/services, or they weren't open. Generally my feeling was it was understaffed. There are lots of rooms that were unused as they were a route to bedrooms or a way to get around the building.

    The sense of place revealed itself to us slowly. Like another reviewer said, the palazzo is like a mystery to be solved. The common rooms, if you could call them that, have a grandeur of perfection. The breakfast room, with its apricot-colored plastered walls and noble dimensions, was peaceful and inviting. Breakfast was good. Loved our spacious bath with tub. On-site parking, once we found it, was a plus.
    The sense of place revealed itself to us slowly. Upon check-in, there was no warm welcome or explanation of the facilities. No one explained that we were free to wander within, any chat about the history of the place....in short the personal element / interaction was lacking. Upon our search for the breakfast room, we discovered the exquisite beauty of the elegant rooms and artwork. But never were we made to feel welcome as guests, queried about our plans or given any hints about must-sees in town. Gorgeous as the palazzo was, the experience left us cold. 'Tis a pity...as whomever the lord is, he/she has superb aesthetics and it just would have been nice to have some genuine humanity and interest shown to the humble traveller.

    The true Matera stay - romantic and magical
    Brilliantly located within Materas Sassi (a short cab ride is needed from the train station if you have suitcases), with great views of the city. Fantastic breakfast, charming interiors, and accommodating staff. We want to stay again!
    Nothing - we had a wonderful experience during our one night stay.

    Fantastico! A unique place in an incredible setting.
    This is a fantastic Palazzo occupying the top of the old town in Matera, steeped in history but sympathetically updated to provide modern comforts. The views over Matera Sassi are incredible. The staff were very welcoming and accommodating - including opening the parking gates at 4:30am so we could get to our balloon ride.
    Unfortunately we stayed during the heatwave so the terrace was (understandably) not in use.

    Location was great right in the middle of the old town. Hotel was clean with old world charm. Staff very friendly and helpful. Beds comfortable and bathroom was modern. Beautiful place would stay there again.

    A crazy beautiful place in the midle of old town with beautiful rooms and an amazing roof top for breakfast.
    An absolute beautiful space in an old, very well kept palazzio in the midle of old town. The location is perfect, and the place is so endlessly beautiful, and the roof top where breakfast is served provides you one of the best 360 views of the city. Dont miss out on their private gallery!
    We loved everything about the place.
