Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Journey from Chandigarh to Shimla - Shimla Local Sightseeing
  • Reach Chandigarh in the morning.
  • Move to Shimla from Chandigarh by cab.
  • Reach Shimla and Check-in hotel.
  • After some rest, visit local sightseeing of the places like Christ Church.
    Built in 1857, the church is known for its neo-Gothic style.
  • Also visit Gaiety Theatre, Scandal Point.
  • Evening time is free to stroll down the famous Mall Road.
  • Overnight stay in Shimla hotel.
  • In the morning, start for Sarahan via Kufri.
  • On the way, stop at Nirth, Dutt Nagar and Rampur Bushehar situated through the Satluj Valley.
    At Nirth, there an old Surya (Sun) temple, dedicated to Shiva & Shakti which was build by Parshuram.
    Dutt Nagar is known for its archaeological importance.
  • Reach Sarahan which is a tiny but beautiful village. It houses the historical Bhimakali temple known to be about 1500 years old.
  • One can also enjoy the best view of Srikhand Dhar and Satluj River.
  • Night stay at Sarahan.
  • Start for Sangla from Sarahan.
  • Sangla is about 95 kms from Sarahan at an altitude of 2680m.
    It takes 4-5 hours via Karcham.
  • Night stay at Sangla.
  • Start from Sangla for Chitkul.
  • The road on this stretch is very narrow and steep till Chitkul.
    Chitkul is the last and highest village (3450m) in Baspa valley. It is situated on the right bank of the Baspa River. There is a temple dedicated to local goddess Mathi, which is said to have been constructed some 500 years ago.
  • Next stop is at Rackchham village.
    The situation of Rackchham (2900m.) village is striking, as it is surrounded by Rocky Mountains, Granite Rock and the forests.
  • Visit Kamru Temple and fort.
  • Trout Fishing can be done in Baspa River with the permission from the Fisheries Officer.
    Surrounded by snowy peaks, Kalpa (2960m.) is the district Head quarter of Kinnaur on Hindustan Tibet Road and offers the nearest view of Kinner Kailash (Shivlingam) peak.
  • Visit Ribba Gompa.
    Ribba Gompa is a 1000 years old monastery and is situated between the villages of Purbani and Rispa is known for Grapes orchards. Alcohol obtained from these grapes is called ANGOORI which is very famous.
  • Night stay at Kalpa.
  • Drive to Tabo via Nako (3658m.)
  • Stop at Nako (3664m.)
    Nako is situated about 2 kms above the Hangrang valley road, west to the huge mountain of Pargil. This is the highest and the largest village in the valley.
  • Visit the monastic complex situated to the north of the village.
    The complex comprises of four large temples belonging to the Dugpa order, the complex is called Locha-Lhakhang i.e. Lhostaba, Lhakhang, after the great Latsab Rin-Chen-Nagpo.
  • Reach Tabo.
    Tabo is situated on the left bank of river Spiti. Surrounded by high hills, the village follows Buddhism essentially. But there are also local Hindu deities called Gyalbo, Dabla and Yalso.
  • Night stay at Tabo.
  • After early breakfast, drive towards Kaza.
  • Visit Tabo monastery.
    Founded in 996AD, the Tabo ‘ Gompa' has exquisite wall paintings and stucco statues and is often called the Ajanta of the ‘Himalaya', after the almost legendary art treasure site in Maharashtra. In terms of area, this is the largest monastic complex in Spiti, and all old section has nine temples,'chortens', a monks' chamber and a nuns' chamber.
    There are several caves and contemporary structure that form a part of the Tabo complex. UNESCO has declared Tabo a ‘World Heritage Site'.
  • Start the drive towards Kaza via Dhankar.
  • Night stay at Kaza.
  • Visit Kaza which is situated at 3600m.
    It has the administrative headquarters of the Spiti, a market place, medical facilities a filling station. It serves as the base for the trekkers.
  • Spend some leisure time, exploring and shopping at Kaza.
  • Drive towards Kibber village (4205m.)
  • Drive up to Kibber (4116M.)
    It is the highest permanently inhabited village in the world connected by a motor able road. It also acts as the base for several high altitudes treks.
    At Kibber, the winter temperature drops below -35 C.
  • After exploring Kibber, visit Ki-monastery.
    Ki Monastery is 11km on the way down and adjacent to the road. It has celebrated its 1000 years to commemorate the auspicious Kalachakra initiation by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in August 2000 for the world peace. Ki is the repository of rare ‘Thangka paintings' and several ancient musical instruments are likely trumpets, cymbals and drums. Its library holds the manuscripts of the sacred Thangyur text. The village of Ki is just short of the monastery.
  • Overnight stay in Kaza
  • Arrive at Chandratal Lake- also known as "The Lake of Moon".
  • If road condition is good, this drive takes around 3 hours otherwise one has to walk to the Lake.
  • A camp could be set-up at the risky point followed by a walk up to the lake for about 2 hours or less.
  • Return to the campsite on the same day.
  • Drive back to the foot of the Kunzum Pass.
  • Explore Batal.
    Batal is a small hamlet and the last village of Spiti valley with a couple of tea houses. It is situated at the foot of the Kunzum Pass.
  • Get some tea with view of Chandra river.
  • After that, drive up to Chota Dara, Chhtru and Grampoo through the rugged and steep Chandra river valley.
    On the way, you can spot the Bara Shigri glacier. The Glacier is gigantic mass of solid ice, more than a kilometer wide and extending over a distance of 10 kilometers. At Grampoo it divides the valley into Lahaul & Spiti. 
  • The right cut at Grampoo leads to Lahaul & Leh and left cut to Rohtang and further down to Manali.
    From Grampoo, drive along the Chandra River with the magnificent rugged valley views.
  • Reach at Manali in the evening.
  • In the morning, visit Hadimba Devi Temple, Manu Temple, Vashisht Village, Vashisht Hot Water Springs, Van Vihar, Hong Kong Market, The Mall and Tibetan Monastery.
  • Have lunch in the aftrenoon and start for Naggar.
  • Visit Naggar Castel, Art Gallery and Museum.
  • After this, visit Kullu and then Mandi.
  • Reach back to the hotel in late evening.
  • Overnight stay at Mandi.
  • In the morning start for Chandigarh.
  • Reach Chandigarh in the afternoon.
  • Drop at Chandigarh for onward journey.
