Cannabis, also known as ganja, is the native plant of Thailand and is considered to be of the same species as hemp. It has been used for its various medicinal properties to relieve pain, ease women’s labor pains, deal with the loss of appetite, solve sleep issues, improve blood circulation, and more but was, for the longest time, part of the Category 5 narcotics list. Although its use for medical purposes with a prescription has been legal since 2018, it was only taken off the narcotics list in June 2022. However, this recent decriminalization has brought about a lot of confusion about what is and isn’t allowed with regards to cannabis consumption in the country. And if you are a tourist, it might be even more confusing for you, so here is everything you need to know about Thailand’s rules on cannabis consumption.

How to deal with any side effects of cannabis?

In case of any side effects, which include dizziness, dry mouth, drowsiness, extreme thirst, and change in blood pressure, one can drink water and rest to feel better. However, seek immediate medical help in case of serious problems like irregular heartbeat, constant vomiting, syncope, heart attack, etc.

It is true that cannabis consumption is no longer illegal in Thailand but the rules moderating or governing this consumption are quite strict and as a tourist, it is advisable to read these regulations and adhere to them so as to avoid getting into trouble. Keep in mind that cannabis consumption, in its different forms, can lead to varied unpredictable effects on your mind and body so you must be careful when engaging in such activities. Furthermore, ensure that when leaving Thailand, you check your own country’s rules pertaining to cannabis possession or export so that you avoid any issues upon arrival.
