May in Malaysia offers a mix of warm temperatures and varying rainfall patterns, depending on the region. As the Southwest Monsoon begins, May brings more rain to the west coast(Penang, Langkawi, Pangkor Island) while the east coast(Tioman Island, Terengganu, Redang) and Cameron Highlands enjoy relatively dry, sunny days. The southwest monsoon brings higher humidity to the west coast, making afternoons uncomfortable, especially in Kuala Lumpur and other lowland cities.

1. East Coast (Tioman Island, Terengganu, Redang)

Weather in May on the East coast of Malaysia offers ample sunshine and dry days. Water activities like snorkeling and diving are the most sought-after activities in May. Relax and soak in the sun with lingering dips in the water pools amongst the white sand beaches.

Temperature: Average around 30°C (86°F), with warmer afternoons and cooler evenings.
Rainfall: May is one of the driest months, with minimal rainfall, ideal for beach activities.
Humidity: Moderate, making it comfortable for outdoor excursions.

2. West Coast (Penang, Langkawi, Pangkor Island)

The West Coast of Malaysia in May experiences the first hits of the South-East monsoon winds. It brings with it a scurry in the humidity and some hefty showers of rain. The sea conditions are not ideal. Pangkor is the more preferable visit on the West coast during this time as the island is comparatively drier and easier to travel to.

Temperature: Warm, with averages around 32°C (90°F).
Rainfall: The Southwest Monsoon begins, bringing heavier afternoon showers and short thunderstorms.
Humidity: High, particularly during the afternoon showers.
Sunshine: Sunshine follows the rain, with short-lived downpours.

3. Lowlands & Highlands (Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Cameron Highlands)

The lowlands and the highlands of Malacca and Kuala Lumpur get ample heat in May and are drier with short tropical spurges of afternoon rainfall. Cameron Highlands gets much colder due to the altitude difference from the mainland. 

Temperature: Kuala Lumpur and Malacca average around 29°C (84°F), while Cameron Highlands stays cooler at about 20°C (68°F) due to altitude.
Rainfall: Kuala Lumpur and Malacca experience short tropical showers, often in the afternoons, while the Cameron Highlands may receive less rain but remains humid.
Humidity: High, making the afternoons feel warmer in the lowlands.
Sunshine: Sunshine with intermittent showers, especially in Kuala Lumpur.

Crowds and Costs: Malaysia in May

In May, the east coast sees higher crowds and prices due to peak season conditions, especially for beach destinations like Tioman and Redang. Booking accommodations early is recommended. The west coast, meanwhile, is quieter as the southwest monsoon begins, often bringing discounted rates in places like Langkawi and Penang. Major cities like Kuala Lumpur remain moderately busy, with stable to slightly discounted prices on hotels and activities.

1. Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands, with its magnanimous green highlands, is a tourist favorite destination for hiking and trekking. The country’s largest hill station with its enormous tea cultivation padlocks will leave you gaping and wanting for more of the peaceful getaway. You can also visit the various temples while you’re here. This hill station is about 200 kms from the city of Kuala Lumpur.

The city has a pleasant climate with occasional tropical showers, a sophisticated and fast lifestyle, and a lot of popular places to visit, both of historical and cultural importance. Pesta Ka'amatan is a public holiday to celebrate the annual harvesting season in Malaysia. Families and farmers take the opportunity to say their prayers and pay respect to the season’s harvest (especially for the bountiful rice cultivation ). The Magavau ceremony is observed, wherein they celebrate the presence of the Rice Spirit. This is held in the paddy stretches on the first full moon after the harvest. This is most popular in the states of Sabah and Labuan.
