- There still are cases of petty crimes such as pickpocketing, selling fake 'valuable' goods such as precious stones, and counterfeit foreign currency. Always make sure to be wary of such scams, especially if the deal sounds too good to be true.
- Always buy from a legitimate and reputable source.
- As a tourist, it is your responsibility to manage your safety as you may be more easily targeted to fall prey to such whitewashing.
2019 Citizen Protests
In 2019, Hong Kong saw one of its most violent and chaotic days amidst the citizen protests, which started in June and is still ongoing. Although the political climate is a little unstable, countries are advising caution while travelling to Hong Kong. Though tourists are welcome, they may face some blocked roads, vandalism and rows between citizens and the police. No tourist injuries have been reported so far. There have been two occasions when these citizen protests clashed with the smooth operations at the airport; thus causing delays and even cancellation of flights. Though these were peaceful protests, there was still a thread of tension between citizens and authorities, causing airline issues and minute loopholes in the overall safety in Hong Kong.
In case you are in Hong Kong during protests, just be vigilant and up to date with the news to know the location of these protests, and avoid them.
