Abisko, in Swedish Lapland, is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights, thanks to its clear skies and minimal light pollution. Located above the Arctic Circle, this small village is surrounded by snow-covered mountains, frozen lakes, and endless wilderness. It consits of Abisko National Park which covers 77 km² and is known for its majestic mountains, alpine valleys, and clear night skies. During winter, Abisko transforms into a dreamy wonderland, where visitors can watch the auroras dance, ride husky sleds, and explore icy trails on snowshoes. Abisko’s dry climate and low light pollution make it one of the best aurora-viewing spots in the world
The Abisko Sky Station, high in the mountains, offers an unforgettable view, with a chairlift ride above snowy forests and frozen rivers leading to a gourmet restaurant where guests dine under the dancing lights. In the heart of Abisko National Park, deep valleys, alpine meadows, and Scandinavia’s largest alpine lake, Torneträsk can be visited. Husky sleds glide through the frozen wilderness, and snowmobiles race across vast, untouched landscapes, while skiers and snowshoers explore the Arctic terrain. As summer arrives, the Midnight Sun bathes the park in golden light, with never-ending days perfect for hiking, canoeing, and exploring wildflower-covered valleys.
Trains & Buses Are Infrequent: The train from Stockholm to Abisko takes ~17 hours, and buses to nearby areas run only a few times per day—plan transport in advance.
Limited Food & Shops: There are few restaurants and no large supermarkets—bring snacks and essentials, especially in winter.
No Sun in Winter, No Darkness in Summer: Polar Night (December–January) means 24-hour darkness, while Midnight Sun (June–July) means no night at all
