Syedra, Alanya Overview

Located a little further outside the city of Alanya, the ruins of Syedra enclose the remains of Roman settlements. These date back to the 7th century BC, with the civilisation being abandoned in the 13th century AD. Relics from this area have been preserved in the Antalya Archaeology Museum. The entrance gates and remains of the fortification walls are still present. The large basilica is still standing, and many of the stoas (corridors) had roofs to shelter people.

The city’s water ancient water system can be seen in the form of plastered cisterns. Other remains include the acropolis, necropolis (graveyard), a baptismal cave, a theatre, churches, a bath with mosaic flooring, and collonaded streets. Syedra is located on a hill facing the coast, 400 metres above sea level. It is recommended to wear full-length pants and covered shoes, as there are a lot of bushes and shrubs at floor level. This ancient settlement is located in the Seki village, 22 kilometres from Alanya. From the acropolis, the city of Alanya itself can be seen. One can reach here by car, travelling from Alanya towards Gazipasa, and taking a left towards Seki village. Public transport can also be availed, with buses going to Seki village. This is an attraction not to be missed, as it gives one a first-hand view into the lives that Turkey once housed.
