Republic Square, known for its expansive size and historical significance has long been a gathering point for national festivities, parades, and cultural events. The square is surrounded by notable landmarks, including the city’s Akimat (mayor’s office) and several administrative buildings. The lush greenery, well-maintained gardens, and fountains make it a popular spot to stroll and enjoy the surroundings.
The main attraction of Republic Square is the Monument of Independence, a 28-meter stele topped by the legendary Golden Man, a symbol of Kazakhstan’s heritage. The monument, designed by a group of artists led by Shota Valikhanov, also features a flying winged leopard and is surrounded by ten bas-reliefs that chronicle the key milestones in Kazakhstan’s history. There are many modern buildings and establishments near the square such as the State Museum, which is one of the largest museums in Central Asia.
