Balai Besar, Alor Setar Overview

Located in the heart of Alor Setar, Kedah, Balai Besar is a royal audience hall whose history dates back to the 1700s. Balai Besar not only features traditional Malay architectural features but it also showcases Victorian and Thai architectural elements. The roof of the hall is adorned with golden carvings and mirrors whereas the pillars are adorned with iron lacework.

Although entrance to the hall is forbidden you can admire its beauty from the outside. Balai Besar was constructed by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin Mu'adzam Shah II to host royal ceremonies. The Sultan drew inspiration from several historical buildings while constructing Balai Besar. The coronation ceremony of two Sultans was hosted at the royal audience hall namely Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Halim Shah II and Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah. The location of Balai Besar is considered to be quite strategic since it is surrounded by several other historical structures namely the Kedah Royal Museum, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Gallery, Nobat Hall, the State Art Gallery and Zahir Mosque.

How to reach:

KTM: Alor Setar is the nearest station located at an 8-minute walking distance.

Drive: If you are travelling by road you need to take the North-South Expressway and then head towards Alor Setar.
