Fort Kuala Kedah, Alor Setar Overview

Fort Kuala Kedah, also known as Kuala Bahang Fort, is a historical treasure located at the northern facet of Kedah River. Built in 1771 by Sultan Muhammad, it was initially used as a protection shield for the Kedah state and Alor Star. Rich in history, the fort has survived many battles and has been rebuilt after several destructions by Bugis, Acehnese, and Siamese. The prime entrance of the fort, Pintu Gerbang Kadapun is grand and faces towards the north of Alor Melaka on a commanding position and equips some government offices.

The fort is designed with vintage white timber and brick walls with embedded cannons. Primarily renowned as a tourist attraction for its museum, one can easily know the historical facts about Kedah town from it. Explore the large weapons, cannons, shields and even the antiques which were used in the 17th century during Sultanate reign. The fort houses a white lighthouse too which is surrounded by a picturesque garden making the fort a must visit for a short trip.

History of Fort Kuala Kedah

Initially built in the 17th century from clay, bamboo, and timber, Fort Kuala Kedah has faced many battles and turbulence in the historic city of Kedah. The fort has been rebuilt a lot of times with more strengthened structure and better design. Here is the list of events witnessed by the fort in past years adding to its rich history: -

- In 1619, Portuguese and Acehnese had a battle which resulted in the destruction of the fort; however, the next Portuguese generation rebuilt the fort.

- In 1770, Bugis army attacked the fort again for a rivalry action against Portuguese. Portuguese took the help of the East India Company to win against Bugis, thus giving the Penang Island to the East India Company as remuneration for help.

- British again made the fort with the help of Indian labourers; however, they went unsuccessful in protecting it against Siamese.

- The last destruction of the fort happened in 1821 and the fort was finally made in 1838.

How to reach Fort Kuala Kedah?

- Bus: - Board orange line bus from Alor Setar for Kuala Kedah. Take a taxi afterwards to reach Fort Kuala Kedah. The entire journey by bus takes 30 minutes and costs RM 3.

- Taxi: - Travel from Alor setar in a private cab or taxi to Fort Kuala Kedah via Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman highway which takes around 21 minutes.
