Situated in the heart of the city, near Bala Qila and Sagar Palace, Karni Mata Mandir is revered Hindu site and a major tourist attraction in Alwar. Supposed to be the fiercest incarnation of Goddess Kali, Karni Mata is the presiding deity of the temple. Although some people also believe her to be a form Goddess Durga. The main idol of Karni Mata holds a trishool and is surrounded by loads of rats. Owing to the plenitude of rat population in the temple, it is popularly known as the ?Rat Temple?. The rodents are considered auspicious and are taken good care of by the temple staff as it is commonly believed that they protect the shrine against any harm. You can also witness local devotees feeding rats with milk and cookies on their laps, to seek blessings from the Goddess.
The temple also boasts of a magnificent edifice with an influence from Mughal architecture. It has large pathways, enormous doorways and huge walls intricately carved with craftwork. Entirely made of sandstone, the temple has elaborate drawings on its pillars, pergolas and domes.
