Villa Rufolo, Amalfi Overview

Villa Rufolo, located in Ravello, is one of the most famous landmarks on the Amalfi Coast. Dating back to the 13th century, it is known for its Moorish-style architecture, lush gardens, and panoramic terraces, it offers stunning views of the coastline. SITA bus from Amalfi to Ravello takes about 25 minutes, with stops near Villa Rufolo. Ravello Festival (July–September) is a special time to visit for live concerts against the stunning coastal backdrop.

Built in the 13th century by the wealthy Rufolo family, the villa was once a center of culture and power, attracting noble families, writers, and artists. Over time, it fell into decline until it was restored in the 19th century by Scottish botanist Francis Neville Reid, who revitalized the gardens and preserved its historic charm.

The gardens of Villa Rufolo are its most famous attraction, offering a breathtaking blend of Mediterranean flora, exotic plants, and manicured terraces. Overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, they are a prime example of 19th-century Romantic garden design, thanks to Francis Neville Reid. These terraces and gardens served as the inspiration for Richard Wagner’s opera Parsifal, and the villa remains deeply tied to the Ravello Festival, where classical concerts are held in an open-air setting with the sea as a backdrop.
