Located in northwest Amsterdam, NDSM is a former shipping wharf area that is used today as a space for exhibitions, live music performances, cultural events, and festivals. It also features offices, student housing, and eatery options.
This spot has a distinctive vibe contrasted with the commotion of the old city center. Established in the 19th century, NDSM (Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij), or Dutch Dock and Shipbuilding Company was the biggest shipbuilding facility in Amsterdam for about a century. The facility went bankrupt in 1984 and halted its operations. However, in the 1990s, this site became a retreat for the creative minds, squatters, and skaters in the city. Artists & craftsmen transformed this post-industrial space into a hotbed for creativity & development in Amsterdam. With restaurants, cafes, & bars, NDSM ship wharf became one of the prime spots in the city to eat, chill, & explore. It is used for hosting festivals in the summer. Notably, the STRAAT museum for street and graffiti is also set at this site in the 8000 sq m former shipyard. You should surely visit this post-industrial wharf if you are seeking something different in this city.
