Our Lord in the Attic is a delightful and unique 17th-century house with a church in the attic. It is nestled in the buzzing city center in the Red Light District area. Notably, it houses one of the oldest museums in the city, where you can distinctively experience the Dutch Golden Age.
Our Lord in the Attic Museum entails the story of tolerance in Amsterdam. The free audio tour narrates the stories of the different periods in this mystifying 17th-century house with an ornate catholic church on the top floor. Here, you can explore the well-preserved rooms adorned with classic furnishings to get an impression of the lifestyle in 17th-century Amsterdam. Besides, the building has a shop and a cozy café. Around 350 years ago, Jan Hartman took this building on Oudezijds Voorburgwal in his acquisition, along with the two adjoining buildings on Heintje Hoekssteeg. The attic floors of all three houses were converted into a Catholic church, according to then-prevailing rules. On the outside, there was no clue that the building comprises a hidden church. Today, visitors have to climb the narrow stairway to the Catholic church in the attic, a Protected State Monument.
