Forts of Anandpur Sahib

Anandpur Sahib was founded in 1665 by the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur. Since then, many of his successors have been involved in developing this town as a safe settlement zone for this community.

When the town was finally inhabited, it had to be protected from the invaders in the West and North. For strategic purposes, many forts were built around the city. The five forts around the town were built by the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.

All of these forts are standing today and are visited by thousands of tourists every year. Qila Anandgarh Sahib is the main fort, being the reason why the city was named Anandpur Sahib. It served as the residence of the then army. Qila Lohgarh Sahib is another important fort where weapons for the army were made.

Qila Holgarh Sahib, Qila Fatehgarh Sahib and Qila Taragarh Sahib are the other three forts.

Suggested Itinerary for Anandpur Sahib

In the morning, enjoy the iconic breakfast of Parathas and ghee and roam the streets of Anandpur Sahib. Since this is a small town, most of the tourist places are located within walking distance of each other. You are likely to discover some unique locations as you walk through the city.

In the evening, visit Gurudwara Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, which is the holiest place in the town since this marks the place where the Khalsa Panth was founded. However, this Gurudwara is always full of devotees, and it may take some time to navigate the crowds. Your visit to the Gurudwara is incomplete without staying for the Langar - a meal offered to the devotees by the Gurudwara. Here, hundreds of pilgrims sit together with gratitude and enjoy minimalistic food in the house of God.

Visiting Gurudwaras: There are more than 10 Gurudwaras in Anandpur Sahib, and it can take more than a week to visit them all, but depending on the time you have and the location of your hotel, you can visit at least 3 or 4 during a weekend trip. The five forts are located at the edges of the city and tourists need to arrange for some form of transport like a hired car or rickshaw to visit them all.
