Gokyay Foundation Chess Museum, Ankara Overview

Situated in Altindag, Gokyay Foundation Chess Museum is renowned for its extensive collection of chess sets. Located in a historical home, the museum spans an area of 1,008 square meters and is known for housing the world's largest chess set collection, featuring 723 sets from 110 countries as of 2024. Materials used for the chess sets include wood, metal, fishbone, marble, soapstone, felt, polyester, and cast iron, among others.

The museum frequently hosts various chess tournaments. Its rich history is reflected in the two-storey building in the Altındağ district, with most of the sets collected by Akın Gökyay, a prominent collector whose efforts have earned a Guinness World Record. The museum features chess sets themed around films, countries, and historical events such as the war between Napoleon Bonaparte and the British, battles from the Ottoman period, and popular culture references like "The Lord of the Rings," "Star Wars," "The Smurfs," and "Asterix." In addition to exploring the extensive chess collection, visitors can enjoy the Chaturanga Café, named after the ancient Indian text on chess and shop.
