History of Republic Museum

The initial building used during the Turkish War of Independence was inadequate for the needs of the newly proclaimed Republic in 1923. Consequently, a new and larger parliament building was commissioned. Designed by architect Vedat (Tek), this new building was inaugurated on September 18, 1924, and served as the seat of the Turkish Parliament until 1960. Following this period, the building functioned as the headquarters for the Central Treaty Organization (CENTO) until its dissolution in 1979. Subsequently, the building was transferred to the Ministry of Culture, which transformed it into a museum. The Republic Museum officially opened on September 30, 1981, commemorating the 100th birth anniversary of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey.
