Ulucanlar Prison Museum is a former state prison and was operational for over eight decades. Located in the Ulucanlar neighborhood of the Altındağ district, It is famous for its impactful portrayal of Turkey's political history and the emotional resonance of its exhibits offering insight into the struggles faced by political prisoners. The realistic displays, including wax figures and preserved artifacts, effectively convey the harsh realities of prison life.
Originally constructed in 1925, Ulucanlar Prison became notorious for housing a diverse array of inmates, including prominent politicians, journalists, writers, and activists. Throughout its operational years, the prison witnessed significant events, including riots and executions, reflecting the political upheavals of Turkey's modern history. Notable figures such as poet Nazım Hikmet, writer YaÅŸar Kemal, and former Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit were among its detainees. The prison was also the site of several executions, including those of political activists Deniz GezmiÅŸ, Yusuf Aslan, and Hüseyin İnan in 1972. After its closure in 2006, the facility underwent restoration and was reopened as a museum in 2011.
