Het Steen, Antwerp Overview

Het Steen is a medieval fortress located in Antwerp's historic city center, prominently situated along the Scheldt River. Constructed between 1200 and 1225, it stands as Antwerp's oldest building and was originally part of a larger castle complex belonging to the Dukes of Brabant. Ot is most famous for an interactive exhibit called The Antwerp Story, and enjoy stunning panoramic views of the city and river from its rooftop terrace.

Following extensive renovations, it reopened in October 2021 as a visitor center, cruise terminal, and home to "The Antwerp Story," an interactive exhibit detailing the city's rich history. Initially known as "Antwerpen Burcht," Het Steen underwent significant reconstruction around 1520 under Emperor Charles V, acquiring its current name, which translates to "The Stone" in Dutch. The fortress was strategically positioned to control access to the Scheldt River, playing a crucial role in the city's defense. In the 19th century, much of the original castle complex was demolished during river straightening projects, leaving Het Steen as a solitary remnant of Antwerp's medieval fortifications. The recent renovations have seamlessly integrated modern architectural elements with the historical structure, ensuring its preservation while enhancing its functionality for contemporary use.
