Museum MAS, Antwerp Overview

The Museum aan de Stroom (MAS) is a prominent cultural institution located in Antwerp's Eilandje district, adjacent to the Scheldt River. Opened in May 2011, this 60-meter-high museum is renowned for its distinctive architecture and extensive collections that explore Antwerp's rich history and its global connections. Visitors are drawn to the MAS for its innovative exhibitions and panoramic city views from its rooftop.

Designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects, the MAS features a striking design composed of stacked red sandstone boxes, each rotated to create a spiraling effect. The façade combines red Indian sandstone with curved glass panels, resulting in a modern yet monumental appearance. A notable feature is the spiral promenade, a public route that ascends the building via escalators, offering visitors evolving perspectives of the city through its undulating glass walls. The rooftop provides a 360-degree panoramic view of Antwerp, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists.

The MAS houses approximately 600,000 objects, focusing on themes that connect Antwerp to the world. Its collections encompass maritime artifacts, international trade, and cultural exchanges, reflecting the city's historical and contemporary global interactions. The museum offers both permanent and temporary exhibitions, presenting stories that link local heritage with global narratives. Additionally, the Visible Storage allows visitors to glimpse behind the scenes, showcasing a selection of items not on regular display.
