The Cave Stream Scenic Reserve is located in Castle Basin which is a low depression bounded by the Torlesse and Craigieburn Ranges. The name ‘Castle Hill’ stems from the castle-like limestone formations throughout the basin. You can experience a 600m limestone cave which is a unique experience and a slightly wet adventure. There are two short walks that lead to the cave entrances which are in complete darkness with twists and turns for about 594m.
The reserve is a 90-minute drive from Christchurch and is located between Broken River Road bridge and Craigieburn Forest Park. It is advisable to carry two torches per person and warm clothing as it is wet and chilly. There are also several small waterfalls to climb over when in the cave and there is a rung ladder to ascend the final waterfall to get out of the cave so sturdy footwear is a must. There is a short trail to the upstream entrance and you can experience limestone formation and sculpted structures. The second track leads to a terrace that overlooks the outflow entrance of the cave. Then, it will take approximately one hour to get through the cave. The outflow entrance is best as you can walk against the flow of the stream.
