Otira Viaduct Lookout, Arthur's Pass Overview

Otira Viaduct Lookout is a beautiful location in Arthur’s Pass in New Zealand’s South Island. You will notice a steep gorge and tight zig-zags of the old road. The viaduct was built due to major rockfall hazards and it is a great place to take in the views of the surrounding area. You will also encounter mischievous kea birds. The river below the viaduct is a sight to behold on a rainy day and the trickling waterfalls on the cliffs turn into torrents.

In winter, you can experience snowy mountains and be surrounded by fog. Otira Viaduct is to the south of Otira and it is between Otira and Arthur’s Pass summit. It was completed in 1999 and the 440m four-span viaduct carries SH73 over a stretch of dangerous land that was previously prone to avalanches and slips. You can take in the surrounding mountains and valleys from a gorgeous location on your way to Arthur’s Pass.
