Kanda, Bageshwar Overview

Situated at the confluence of three rivers, namely, Saryu, Gomti and latent Bhagirathi, lies the holy township of Bageshwar, which is also revered to as the pious land associated with Lord Sadashiva, said to be the redeemer of all sins. If we wre to believe the puranas, this undoubtedly is a place capable of liberating one from the eternal bondage of births & deaths. With the east and west sides of the town being flanked by the Bhileswar and Nileshwar mountains, and surrounded by the Suraj Kund in the north and the Agni Kund in the south, this land of Lord Shankar is of great religious, historic and political significance.

Temples in Bageshwar

The main attraction of this historical place are its numerous temples. Rhe most important of these is the one which stands at the junction of the rivers Gomti and Saryu, called the Bagnath Temple, standing out uniquely with it's conical tower. Here is the shrine of Bageswar or Vyagreswar, the, "Tiger Lord", an epithet of Lord Siva. Another temple, situated 26 kms away from the town is the Baijnath Temple, situated on the left bank of the Gomti. On the way to the main temple, just below the Mahanta house, is the temple of Bamani, which is a corrupt form of the Sanskrit word Brahmani. Traditions of the place say that it was built by a Brahmin widow who dedicated the temple to Lord Shiva. Other prominent temples to visit near the town of Bageshwar are the Chandika Temple, the Sriharu Temple and the Gauri Udiyar.

An Excursion to Kausani

Known as the nature's own reserve of solitude, Kausani stands 1890 mts above the sea level. Several snow capped peaks stand in a stately row, over 300 kms in length, shining against the azure sky making the horizon,as seen from Kausani, and enviable spectacale. The glory of the snow crowned Himalayan range reaches it's pinnacle when the sun rays turn them into crimson and gold. Mahatama Gandhi, who spent 12 days in 1929 at Kausani, penned his memorable commentary on the Geeta-Ana-Sakti yoga inspired by the scenic grandeur of this richly gifted spot. The guest house where the Mahatama stayed is now know as Anasakti Ashram. The wide expanse of the famous Katyur Valley also lies in front of it, as you wake up to experience the Kausani sunrise.

Trekking from Bageshwar

A trekking trip which covers the Pindari Glacier, Sunderdhunga Glacier and the Kaphni Glacier of the Kumaun region has its starting base in the district of Bageshwar. If one has to experience the beauty of snowbound peaks, crystal glaciers, rolling meadows, jagged rock faces, scenic valleys, meandering rivers, cascading waterfalls and dense forests unfiltered, along with hospitable people with a rich local culture, this trekking trip has to be it. Another eqaully beautiful, although smaller trek, the Namik Glacier Trek, covers the snout of Namik Glacier and the stream coming down from Anargal, which later meets the main stream after going through Jogi Udiyar the ascent of Bhindawali and Penthang.

How To Reach Kanda

The easiest way to reach Bageshwar is via Air. Nearest airport to this place is located in Dehradun, the Jolly Grant Airport which is directly connected to selected major cities of India via domestic flights. One can hire a taxi or the local state bus to reach this place, which is located nearly 200 km from Dehradun. Also, inter-state Road Transportation facilities can also be used to reach the city of Dehradun from the major cities, after which its relatively easy to reach Bageshwar via Road.
