History of Bago

Bago was founded in 1276 CE when the Pagan empire flourished in Burma. Monk Dhammazedi, who became King in the 14th century was notable of all rulers who developed Bago to become the centre for Theravada Buddhism.

Bago prospered as a seaport, which attracted in the Portuguese in the 1500s, which led to several attempts of conquests and siege. The Portuguese succeeded in looting much of the wealth from the kingdom. It was only in the 1700s that the Mons recaptured the city of Ava, restoring it as their capital. Civil wars led to constant conflicts, and Bago never recovered as it eventually fell into the hands of the British.
