Built-in the 17th century, the Pura Ulun Danu Bratan temple was originally erected in honor of the Trimurtis, or Holy Trinity of Hindu mythology - the Lords Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. It is also in honor of the lake Goddess Danu. Danu, in Balinese means lake. A stone slate and sacrophagus discovered on the temple premises, records the existence of the temple to as far back as around 500 BC. It is believed to have been rebult during the reign of King Mengwi in the 1600s, lending to its Buddhist influence.

Set amidst the scenic backdrop of the mountains of Bedugul and the lake Beratan, the Pura Ulun Danu Bratan temple forms a truly beautiful and majestic picture. It is located around 1500 metres above sea level, and is constructed in the typical Balinese architectural designs with multitiered shrines. There are four temples here - the Dalem Purwa Temple, Terate Bang Temple, Lingga Petak Temple and the Penataran Pucak Mangu Temple.

Three shrines are in worship of each of the trimurtis. The 11 tiered shrine is for Lord Vishnu, the 7 tiered one is for Brahma, and the 3 tiered one is for Shiva. The colors of red,black and white is also representative of the trimurtis. A statue of Buddha is also enshrined within the temple, and there is a Buddhist stupa in the beautiful gardens of the temple.
