Lumphini Park, Bangkok Overview

Named after the birthplace of Lord Buddha in Nepal, Lumpini Park was the first public park in Bangkok. It is a multi-functional park with an artificial lake for boating, jogging, walking and cycling paths, a sports center, a library, and Elder Citizens Club. A statue of Rama VI is also built inside the park.

Over the years, the park has become a centre of various leisure activities, from jogging to light workouts and many other recreational activities such as aerobics, rowing, paddleboats, and other gym activities. Be aware of crocodiles living in the ponds; other tree mollusks call this place their home. The best time to enjoy the park and its activities are during the bright early morning or at dusk. Avoid hand feeding to the animals as instructed by the park authorities. The original aim was to exhibit Thai crafts and flowers. Today, the place is home to many flora and fauna species attracting locals and tourists to relax and rejuvenate. Lumpini Park is the perfect place to connect with nature, away from the crowded Bangkok streets of Bangkok.

The major attraction at Lumpini Garden is the statue of King Rama VI. The founder of the park, his statue was erected at the southern entrance of the park in 1942.

And just when we thought that this is all a park can have, it surprises us with its own library! Lumpini Park Library, which is open for 12 hours a day, is a storehouse of books and information about Bangkok. There are a bunch of video presentations also. It is Bangkok’s first public library.

Smiling Sun Ground: The Smiling Sun Ground is a haven for children and disabled people. There are a lot of swings and rides for kids and easy to access resources, like exclusive parking lots, for the disabled.
Bangkok Elder Citizens Club: Then comes Bangkok Elder Citizens Club, which provides an opportunity for old age group members to communicate, exercise and involve themselves in healthy activities, such as dancing.
The Home of Hope: Home of Hope is another gem of Lumpini Park, where homeless children are educated and given refuge.
Lumpini Youth Centre: Lumpini Youth Center is another interesting thing, where the members can indulge themselves in different kinds of sports and activities. Soccer, dancing, swimming etc. are some of the events provided by this youth centre.

While you are calmly sitting on the ground and listening to songs, it is always possible that a resident of the park might greet you. By "resident", we mean crocodiles which live in pond and tree molluscs. The jolly squirrels can be easily spotted playing on the branches of the trees. And since it is full of greenery and tall trees, as many as 30 different species of birds can be found here. They chirp on the branches of the trees and sound melodious to ears.

Every year, a bird-watching instruction takes place, where one can learn about these little creatures.

Crepe Myrtle
Among trees and flowers, a ubiquitous sight is Crepe Myrtle, which is a small flower-bearing tree.

Other Highlights
The golden rain tree and bougainvillaea flowers are also pretty common and add flowery scent to the air.

Where to Eat at Lumpini Park

Sri Thai Derm Food Center, which opens in the morning, is a good breakfast place and the menu contains some of the Thai snacks like pad thai, jim joom etc. Just outside the south gate of Lumpini Park, food vendors stand with their food stalls, where you can enjoy light snacks. The weekend food market, where all kinds of food items, is also located just outside the park on weekends. Here, you can find food ranging from seafood and Chinese and Thai cuisine.

How To Reach Lumpini Park

The best way to reach Lumpini Park is via MRT or BTS. If you are choosing BTS, then Sala Daeng Station on the Silom Line is closest to the park and by MRT, Lumphini and Si Lom stations on the Blue Line are the closest to here. A tuk-tuk can be taken after deboarding to reach Lumpini Park. A lot of buses also go via this route, like Rama IV Road buses, Witthayu Road buses and Sarasin Road Buses.
