Aquarium Barcelona is Europe's largest and most important marine science museum of the Mediterranean. It is located on the Moll d'Espanya at Port Vell, accessible by foot from the Old Town and Barceloneta. Animals and their habitats are displayed impressively in this aquarium.
The Aquarium has over 11,000 marine animals of 450 species and, here, maritime habitats are emulated in over 35 different water basins. A see-through 80-meter-long glass tunnel is the highlight of the Aquarium. There are four main sections of the Aquarium: The Ozeaneum, Mediterranean Aquariums, Tropical Aquariums, Theme Aquaries, and exciting areas for children.
The Ozeaneum area, with a diameter of 36 meters, has a variety of underwater species, particularly sea bream, moray eels, sunfish, rays, and two shark species, the sand tiger sharks and the sandbank sharks. The Mediterranean Aquarium is the largest and has the most diverse inhabitants from the Mediterranean region. The Tropical Aquariums is home to seven pools dedicated to tropical shark species, coral reefs, and specifically the Great Barrier Reif of Australia. Theme Aquaries comprise invertebrate sea creatures, shark eggs, and seahorses. The children can enjoy the fascinating underwater world and introduce themselves to the ecosystems most excitingly and playfully.
