Manzana de la Discordia

Manzana de la Discordia, Barcelona Overview

One of Barcelona's major avenues, the Manzana de la Discordia or Block of Discord is located in Passeig de Gràcia. The building joins the three masterpieces called Casa Lleó Morera, Casa Ametller, and Casa Batlló.

The Manzana de la Discordia is known as the heart of Catalan Modernism as it flaunts the buildings designed by Barcelona's four most important modernista architects. An open-air museum of architectural buildings is affectionately called by the Barcelonans "La Manzana de la Discordia," which means "the Block of Discord" in English. The Casa Amatller was reformed between 1898 and 1890 and has been open to the public since 2015, and houses the Institut Amatller d'Art Hispànic. The architectural design is a mosaic of twisted columns, extravagant ceramic motifs, and more. In 1904, Antonio Gaudí turned the modest building and created it into a spectacular icon of modernism, which today is called Casa Batlló, as the World Heritage of UNESCO. The building represents a calm sea, and it is the perfect expression of the genius Gaudí. This building symbolises the battle between Sant Jordi against the dragon. Casa de Lleó i Morera is the result of the reform of Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Around 40 craftsmen designed the decore of the building richly and profusely. Tourists can visit the inner courtyard, which has Barcelona's most beautiful preserved modernist interiors.
