The biggest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia, Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya temple, is a peaceful homage to the Buddha Maitreya. It is home to some of the largest statues of the many forms of Buddha, primarily the Buddha Maitreya. The temple has five sections, with prayer halls and rooms filled with art and sculpture.
The power and beauty of the temple draw many people towards it, both locals and foreigners. However, the temple offers many rooms that can accommodate many who wish to offer prayers or meditate. Thus, Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Temple is one of the island's most tranquil and peaceful places to visit. Accompanying the main Buddha statue are 12 other smaller statues which represent the animals of the Chinese zodiac signs. There is also a vegetarian restaurant, a souvenir shop, and a clinic. Tourists may take photos within the vihara, which is usually crowded on weekends and holidays.
