Damrey Sor Pagoda

History

Damrey Sor Pagoda was built in the 19th century and hence is a new addition compared to the other temples in Battambang, which belong to the Angkor era. Although it is a Buddhist pagoda, the temple is dedicated to Hindu God Shiva, with the central sanctuary consisting of the linga.

Architecture

But the unique architectural characteristic of Damrey or Pagoda are life-size sculptures of white elephants carrying portraits of Lord Buddha. The outer walls and the inner halls have intricate carvings depicting scenes from Buddhism. There are also two small libraries within the temple premises, along with a tall temple tower, which is believed to have been from the earlier period belonging to another temple in the area.

New Year Celebrations

During the New Year festival here, the adjoining streets and the temple areas are decorated colourfully. Thousands of people gather to pray and participate in throwing coloured water at each other, which is a unique ritual thought to bring good luck and prosperity during the year ahead.
