Old Town, Bern Overview

Bern's Old Town, or "Altstadt," is the historic heart of Switzerland's capital, situated on a peninsula encircled by the Aare River. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, it is centrally located, approximately a 10-minute walk from Bern's main train station. It is also known for its 6 kilometers of covered arcades, offering one of the longest covered shopping promenades in Europe. Numerous cafés, restaurants, and shops are nestled within these arcades and along the cobblestone streets.

Visitors to the Old Town can explore a variety of attractions. The Zytglogge, a 13th-century clock tower, offers an hourly mechanical show that captivates onlookers. The Münster of Bern, Switzerland's tallest cathedral, showcases impressive Gothic architecture. Strolling along the Kramgasse, a principal street lined with 15th-century arcades, provides opportunities to visit shops, cafés, and historical sites, including the Einsteinhaus, where Albert Einstein lived from 1903 to 1905. The area also features numerous 16th-century fountains, such as the Kindlifresserbrunnen (Child Eater Fountain), each with its own story.
