History of Beruwala

Beruwala in Sri Lanka is said to be the first Moorish settlement on the island. Established by the Arab traders in the 8th century, Beruwala was known for its gem trade. Yesteryear gem traders lived in the China fort and dealt in precious stones and pearls. Legend has it that Beruwala is where Islam was born in Sri Lanka.

This quiet town in Sri Lanka is welcoming tourists all-round the year. The temperature varies between 26°C and 30°C during the hotter part of the year. Being a coastal town, it is subject to humidity; January being the least humid and November being the wettest month. Sri Lanka as such hosts a tonne of tourists of all nationalities during December as Christmas and New years are touted to be magical in this land down South. However, June – July sees the least number of tourists and is relatively more suitable for the pockets. Since the seas are shallow, they encourage swimming along the shores during all months, except October – November when the rains arrive.
