Kalutara District in Western Goa is home to the Beruwala beach town. Located 60 km South of Colombo there are splendid sights in and around this peaceful town. The first ever beach resort on the west coast and is located near the Alguthama fishing village and the ever famous Bentota beach resort.

Beruwala is called “Golden mile” and faithful to its name the beach basks in the warmth of the yellow sun lined by palm trees. Water scooter rides, windsurfing, parasailing, water skiing are some of the adventure sports on the seas. The icing on the cake is that the Bay beach is safe for swimming all through the year and paves the way for Deep-sea Fishing and Wreck & Coral Reef Diving.

The Beruwala fishing harbour and lighthouse are scenic at dawn; the pungent fish lying amidst canoes and fish nets present an excellent tourist experience. Kachimalai Mosque, Galapata Buddhist Temple, China Fort – a gem trading market, Masjid ul Abrar are common sights to see with a local twist. Apart from this Morgalla beach, Ventura beach, Barberyn Island showcase nature’s beauty under lush green shade.

History of Beruwala

Beruwala in Sri Lanka is said to be the first Moorish settlement on the island. Established by the Arab traders in the 8th century, Beruwala was known for its gem trade. Yesteryear gem traders lived in the China fort and dealt in precious stones and pearls. Legend has it that Beruwala is where Islam was born in Sri Lanka.

What is the best time to visit Beruwala?

This quiet town in Sri Lanka is welcoming tourists all-round the year. The temperature varies between 26°C and 30°C during the hotter part of the year. Being a coastal town, it is subject to humidity; January being the least humid and November being the wettest month. Sri Lanka as such hosts a tonne of tourists of all nationalities during December as Christmas and New years are touted to be magical in this land down South. However, June – July sees the least number of tourists and is relatively more suitable for the pockets. Since the seas are shallow, they encourage swimming along the shores during all months, except October – November when the rains arrive. Fishing is their source of livelihood that takes place actively throughout the year and stilt-fishing their traditional way is quite an interesting one. Ceylon tea is a Sri Lankan speciality and does good on the warm days and cosy nights as the temperature drops!
