Also Refered As:Bintan Island, also known as Negeri Segantang Lada, is situated in the Riau Archipelago, Indonesia. Formerly an important trading hub between India and China, this island is now home to some of the most luxurious resorts and recreational centres, making it a highly sought-after beachside getaway. Located close to Singapore and Jakarta via a ferry ride, Bintan has grown into a weekend destination that enjoys a tropical climate throughout the year.
The beaches on Bintan Island are quite exotic. While some, like Hamid Beach, offer tranquillity and excellent sunbathing opportunities, there are others, such as White Island, which offer powdery white sands. In addition, some beaches offer shallow coastlines, making them perfect for swimming and kayaking for beginners and enthusiasts alike. Besides this, visitors can also indulge in water activities like canoeing, jet skiing, surfing, and wakeboarding.
The culinary experience which has developed on the island is one of its major selling points. From lavish restaurants offering International cuisines to trendy cafes offering comfort food, the island caters to scores of hungry patrons. The fresh seafood dishes on offer are not to be missed out.
For a more traditional experience, visitors can visit the local villages, find some local dining options, and interact with some Malay, Bugis, and Chinese tribes. The island is also home to some important historical sites which are interesting. There are a couple of large shopping centres on the island. Still, tourists mainly flock to the local shops selling exquisite Indonesian handicrafts like hand-drawn batiks, cultural artefacts, and other souvenirs.
