The Big Bell is a historic 13th-century gateway located on Rue Saint-James, near Bordeaux’s city center. Once part of the medieval city walls, it features a 17th-century bell weighing over 7 tons, which still rings on special occasions. Recognized for its Gothic and Renaissance architecture, the bell tower is one of the city's oldest landmarks and a symbol of Bordeaux’s heritage. Visitors admire its intricate carvings and enjoy its proximity to charming streets and local cafés.
One can access the stairs which leads to the top of the tower where one can get a closer view of the bell. A magnificent view of the entire city along with a display of monuments such as the Pont de Pierre or the Basilica of Saint Michael. The ambience is quite pleasant. Also, one can find cafes, bars and restaurants too in and around this monument.This monument has rich history as well as showcases Gothic style of architecture which interests many tourists. The Big Bell was set up in the 15th century and was used all through the Middle Ages in order to caution its citizens of forthcoming emergencies, including fires and natural disasters.
